Tryouts for 2018-2019 Teams

Tryouts for the fall 2018 - spring 2019 soccer year begin the week of May 21st.  WOUFC cordially invites all children born between 2004 and 2011 to tryout.  There is no cost to tryout, but all players - both current and prospective new players - must register.

Where?  When?

All players currently playing for West Orange United teams will be evaluated at ongoing practices.

Prospective new players born between 2007 - 2004 will be invited to attend an ongoing practice session with one of our current teams during the weeks of May 21st and 29th. After you register, we will contact you with information about the date and time of the appropriate session for your player. Players should bring a ball, water, shin guards and cleats/sneakers, and plan to arrive 10 minutes early to check in.

What Happens Next?

We expect to communicate tryout results to families by email no later than June 10. Players offered a position will be required to accept and make a $150 deposit payment by June 18 in order to secure their spot. This deadline will be strictly enforced, as we must register (and pay for) our fall teams by the end of June.  Please ensure that the email address(es) associated with your Mountain Top account are current and correct so that we are able to contact you.

Players not invited to join a travel team, or who wish to play only locally in West Orange, should register for the Mountain Top fall soccer program. In addition to weekly league play for children age 4 through 9th grade, Mountain Top offers weekly professional training sessions. Like the travel program, Mountain Top follows the U.S. Soccer player development model, and provides an excellent opportunity for players to improve their skills.

What Are the Costs of Travel Soccer?

Program fees for the 2018-2019 year will be $850. Payments will be due as follows:

$150 by June 18, $150 by July 15, $125 by August 15

$150 by November 15, $150 by January 15, $125 by Feburary 15

Limited financial aid is available.  Players are also required to purchase a uniform, at an additional cost of approximately $140.

Anything Else I Should Know?

• West Orange United is a competitive travel soccer program. We currently field 21 teams playing in three different leagues.

• Travel soccer is a substantial commitment for both players and families. Players are expected to play both fall and spring seasons. Teams practice two evenings per week and play games each weekend. Attendance at practices and games is mandatory. Most players also participate in a winter indoor session in January and Feburary. Details about the winter program, including cost, will be available in November.

•       Each season (fall and spring) consists of approx. 10 games, half played in West Orange, and half in other towns.  Travel time ranges from 10 minutes (Livingston, Verona, etc.) up to about an hour, with the average being about 40 minutes.  In the fall, most boys teams will play Saturdays and a few will play Sundays. All girls will play Sundays.  All teams play Sundays in the spring.  Make-up games can be scheduled Sat., Sun. or during the week (rarely).

• We anticipate that Fall practices will begin September 4. All teams will participate in the Essex Fall Tune-Up Tournament held in West Orange and Livingston the weekend of September 7-9. Teams will complete their fall season by Thanksgiving. Spring practices will begin mid-March, depending on the weather and league start dates. All teams will have the opportunity to play in the Cougar Memorial Day Tournament in Maplewood/South Orange. The spring season will wrap up in early/mid-June, depending on the league.

• WOUFC follows the U.S. Soccer player development model. Each year teams are formed based on age and our trainers’ assessment of current ability level to provide the best possible environment for each player to develop his/her skills and understanding of the game. Team placement is not permanent and may change from year to year and occasionally season to season. In accordance with US Soccer guidelines, for the 2018-2019 year players born in 2009-2010 will play 7v7, players born in 2007-2008 will play 9v9, and players born in 2004-2006 will play 11v11.  Players born in 2008 may play 4v4 or 7v7, depending on league offerings.
